Has anyone had any problems with used games that theyve bought from places like EB games?
im thinking of buying a used game instead of buying 60 bucks for a new one..opinions?
I almost never buy new games anymore, but instead buy used titles from Gamestop.
I’ve never had a problem, but use these tips:
* Only pick out cases that have the original inserts and manuals. There’s no discount for getting one of those goofy "Gamestop" labeled cases with no manuals, so you might a well get the complete package.
* Avoid the Gamestops in the malls. Too many parents use the store as a daycare center, leaving their kids to maul the inventory. Not only are stores in the mall hopelessly disorganized, but they also tend to end up with a higher proportion of games from younger players who may not have taken as good care of the discs and manuals. Again, since you’re going to pay the same price for a copy of a game that has no manual, and one that’s in nearly mint condition, you might as well get your money’s worth.
* Inspect the discs at the register. Gamestop/EB are supposed to only take back games if they’re in very good shape but it never hurts to make sure. The stores do use a disc cleaner to try and remove any scratches, and have a guarantee that any used game they sell you will work, just in case. However, I’ve seen discs that still had some bad scratches on them. Don’t be afraid to ask for a different disc.
* Sign up for an Edge card. The card is $20/year but gets you 10% off any used game or accessory you buy. This discount stacks with other sales or coupons(!) For instance, they had a coupon for 20% off used PS3 games, so I picked up a couple of games for a total of about $70. The coupon knocked that down to $56, and then my Edge Card knocked it down to just over $50. As a bonus, you also get a subscription to Game Informer magazine. With some careful shopping, the Edge Card will easily pay for itself each year.
* Sign up for their weekly email newsletters on the store’s website. Each week you’ll get email about the latest releases and special offers the store is running as well as email-exclusive coupons. You can print as many copies of the coupon as you like, but you can only use one coupon per purchase. Yes, I’ve gone into the store, bought some games with a coupon, gone outside to put them in the car, walked back in with a 2nd copy of the coupon, and bought more games.
The coupons are for things like extra money when trading games or consoles in (mostly useless, since the trade in values are very low) to the more useful 20-30% off a specific platform’s titles. However the best coupon is their Buy 2 Get One Free deal. Just remember, the cheapest game you buy will be the free one. So try to pick out 3 games that are about the same price. Using this coupon, it’s possible to buy 3 very recent games at $55/ea for a total of $99 after the 10% discount from your Edge Card – that’s just $33/game, or a total discount of about 45% if you had bought those 3 titles, new, at $60/each!
